Central Regional Minister, MP contradicts each other on UEW closure

Students of the University of Education, Winneba are at still at sea following the contradictions between government officials over the closure of the school.

After the Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan on Thursday announced the closure following violent protest by students, Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo Markin told them to stay.

In a Facebook post Friday, he claimed the decision reached by the Central Regional Security Council to close down the school has been overturned.

Hon. Afenyo Markin urged students to stay on campus and attend lectures as the Governing Council of the University has even reinstated three lecturers whose sack sparked the protest.

But in a quick rebuttal, the Central Regional Minister on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Friday said no such decision has been reached.

He said what he discussed with the Effutu MP is for the police to allow students from Kumasi, Tamale and other area to spend the night and vacate their halls Friday morning.

“I’m very surprised at the position by the MP because the school remains closed. The students who are still there must leave today” he stressed.

Hon. Kwamena Duncan added that, when all outstanding issues are addressed, only the principals can announce that the university has been opened.
