Some seven persons who were arrested on Tuesday during a demonstration against the gold trading firm, Menzgold Ghana Limited are due to appear before the Asokore Mampong District Court in the Ashanti Region.

The seven who were part of a group calling itself ‘Aggrieved Customers of Menzgold’ were arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command after they defied a police order to stage a demonstration against Menzgold.

The group, who had gone to the premises of Menzgold near the Amakom Roundabout, burnt tyres and blocked some roads, causing traffic congestion on the Accra-Kumasi road.

It took the combined efforts of the police and personnel of the Fire Service to calm the protesters who had attempted to march to the Manhyia Palace.

The police had earlier warned the protesters to desist from embarking on the demonstration since they had not followed due process as spelled out in the Public Order Act.

Responding to Tuesday’s demonstration, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, SP Godwin Ahianyo said the police would not rest until the demonstrators are brought to book.

“[They are] over one hundred if I am not mistaken, we are still picking them. We are not going to end now, we have some names, we have some telephone numbers. And we have people who are behind this demonstration. We will be inviting them, we will get them and we’ll also put them before court,” he said.
