The police have charged the four suspects who were arrested by the Airport District Police Command in the Ashanti Region, in connection with the death of one Naomi Opoku, 37, with rape and conspiracy to rape.

The suspects are Margret Aborah, 60; Emmanuel Afriyie, 36; and two juveniles whose names have been withheld.

The victim, a plantain chips seller at Buokrom in Kumasi, died after the rape.

According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, preliminary investigations established that on 28 December 2018, the deceased was hawking the chips and went to a drinking bar which belongs to one of the suspects, Margret Aborah. She then got drunk. The deceased ordered the granddaughter of the suspect to serve her with three tots of a local gin popularly called ‘akpeteshie’.

The Police PRO told Adehye FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that the deceased, after taking the liquor, became unconscious, and, on the orders of Margret, two juvenile suspects who are her grandsons carried the victim into one of their rooms, ostensibly to let her rest for a while until she regained consciousness.

However, Mr Emmanuel Afriyie, who was also drinking at the same bar sneaked into the room where the unconscious chips seller had been taken by the juveniles and took sexual advantage of her.

The two juveniles caught Mr Afriyie in the act but giggled away.

The owner of the bar, despite having been informed about the rape incident failed to act and left the victim to her fate until 29 December 2018 at about 5:30 am when she passed away.

The grandmother and her two grandsons later found the chips seller dead in the room.

The 60-year-old suspect and her grandsons dumped Naomi’s body on the street, about 100 meters from the drinking bar.

The Buokrom police was informed about the incident and quickly caused the arrest of all four suspects who are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for an autopsy.
