Tafo killing: Charged youth issue 3-day ultimatum to govt for justice

Members of the Tafo Three Miles Youth Association have issued a three-day ultimatum to the government of Ghana and the relevant state authorities to ensure justice for the family of a 35-year-old man who was allegedly beaten to death by police officers in the area or face their anger.

The youth are demanding an independent investigation into the case.

They want any officer found guilty to face justice; else they will take the law into their own hands.

The deceased, Kofi Poku, was allegedly asked to pull over by the police on Sunday, 7 July 2019, but refused to do so. A team of police patrol officers at Tafo-Pankrono then gave him chase and allegedly beat him until he went unresponsive.

The victim was said to have been taken to the Tafo Government Hospital and was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, 11 July 2019 after a protest, the angry youth called on President Nana Akufo-Addo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area and the chiefs to intervene immediately before things get out of hand.

“We want the authorities to bring all the people involved to justice. He left behind a wife and [two] children, so, we also want compensation for the family”, they demanded, adding: “We are giving them up to three days and if we don’t hear from them, it will be more than this [protests],” the leader of the youth stated.

Meanwhile, the chief of Tafo, Nana Agyen Frimpong Ababio, has met with the youth, the bereaved family and the Tafo-Pankrono Police commander over the matter.

He called on the youth to remain calm as the investigation into the death of Kofi Poku continues.
